Nahom ghirmay

Eritrea/ Seattle, Washington, USA

Nahom Ghirmay is a Seattle-based painter whose work is characterized by its fluid, otherworldly, and subjectively expressionistic nature, often emitting a unique serenity. His art explores narratives of resilience, transnational movement, and displacement, creating universal realms that offer psychological refuge and connection. His artworks also explore the complexities of identity and emotional experiences through a range of mediums.

Background and Journey
Born in Eritrea, Ghirmay's personal story is one of profound resilience, having left his home as a young teenager. His journey included traveling through Sudan, South and Central America, and relying on the kindness of strangers before finally making his way to Seattle, Washington. After a nine-month solo-immigration from Sudan to Seattle, he later graduated from the University of Washington with an engineering degree , a testament to his discipline and resolve, which now informs the methodical curiosity he brings to his artistic practice.

Ghirmay's work is deeply African in its narrative tone and graded colors, yet his unique visual language refuses to be constrained by specific category or place, creating universal entry points for viewers.

He states, "I'm fascinated by the ways in which we communicate our innermost feelings through our facial expressions and body language. I draw inspiration from the stories, ambitions, and worries of those around me, seeking to capture these narratives through my brushstrokes, charcoal marks, and carefully chosen color palettes. I believe that art has the power to connect people across cultures and backgrounds. Through my work, I hope to foster empathy and understanding between individuals, and to create a space for meaningful dialogue."

His paintings often feature custom palettes that summon memories of his several homes. He imagines nondescript features and scenes free of recognition, yet they hold anchors of secure psychological footing. His visual language has evolved decisively from the precise delineation of East African facial features that tether him to home, to more open, liminal human forms—undefended, elemental, and soul-forward. These figures feel both intimate and universal, making room for anyone to recognize themselves. His murals arrest passerby because he uniquely creates "portals of movement" rather than overly determined representations. Increasingly, he plays with landscape as a conceptual armature, letting water, deserts, and floral planes dissolve into "chromatic weather".

His debut series, Journey to Serenity, showcases a "hush-layered brushwork that welcomes irregularity" and transmutes instability into presence, reflecting a composed and relational way of moving through the world. His recent solo exhibition, Tracing the Inner Child, created a community exchange (in lieu of an artist talk) where a diverse audience could find their journeys, stories, yearnings, and paths for healing through the questions his work raises. Ghirmay is described as a "world-building artist" who dreams up new worlds of ancestors and future descendants, managing to save himself from the destabilizing effects of refugee trauma through his art.

Beyond his craft, Ghirmay is recognized for his discipline, focus, and generosity, holding deep values of building supportive communal space to learn about and with others within and beyond art communities. He is described as being "truly free of ego, awake to the violences of the world, yet calm and intentional in how he engages it".
