Like the alchemists who sought to transmute base elements into gold, Callender experiments with materiality—layering texture, color, and gesture to encode meaning within the surface.

This theme of transformation became deeply personal after the birth of her first child. Motherhood, like alchemy, is an act of creation—one that is both intentional and unpredictable, both physical and intangible. Each painting in this exhibition reflects that journey of transition, renewal, and becoming.

Curator’s Note:

A radiant interplay of color and space, Rainbow in Someone’s Cloud feels like a fleeting moment of light after the storm. Anchored by soft washes of pale blues and whites, bursts of coral, deep indigo, and bright greens emerge—pockets of energy suspended in motion.

The composition suggests contrast and balance: warmth and coolness, structure and fluidity, movement and stillness. Callender’s expressive marks, both delicate and bold, create a sense of layered emotion, as if colors themselves are in quiet contemplation. The title evokes the idea of being a source of light in another’s life, of hope materializing in unexpected forms.
